Originally built around 1905 this carousel is one of north america's best examples of a large four abreast merry-go-round. Each animal is hand carved by the Charles Looff Company of Riverside Rhode Island. Looff was one of the manufacturers responsible for what is know as the "Coney Island" style of carousel, with colourful showy animals that seem to strain as they gallop into the wind.
The carousel was moved to Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie in the early 1920's from Hanlan's Point in Toronto to serve as the centerpiece of the new amusement park. Lakeside Park and the carousel thirved until the mid sixties and although the other rides and games have long since departed the carousel still remains at a nickel a ride.
Full restored and meticulously maintained by the city of St. Catharines this carousel is one of Niagara's greatest treasures. Riding a carousel is a simple pleasure, a journey back to our childhood. It is a ride that never ends.
